Electrical Fire Prompts Belmont Office Building Evacuation
Approximately 100 people were evacuated from their workplace in Belmont this week, when a fire broke out on top of an office building, police said.
Some 100 people had to be evacuated from a Belmont office building this week, when a fire broke out on the roof, according to fire officials.
Belmont police Capt. Patrick Halleran said that the incident happened around 4:50 p.m. Monday at 1301 Shoreway Road. Emergency crews were called out to investigate reports of smoke on the first floor of the four-story building.
"Due to the size of the building, Belmont Fire was assisted by units from the San Mateo-Foster City and Redwood City Fire Departments," he said in a press release.
Halleran said firefighters were able to track down the source of the smoke to a fire in the air conditioning equipment on the roof.
"The fire was quickly extinguished and damage was confined to the air conditioning unit, but not before the air conditioning system had pumped the smoke into the ventilation ducts, spreading it throughout a section of the building," he said.
Evacuees had to wait in the parking lot for about an hour for the fire to be put out, and the smoke to clear the inside, according to Halleran. No on was hurt.
