Elderly Woman Drives Through Belmont Carport, Flips Vehicle

An elderly Belmont woman escaped injury this weekend when she drove through a local carport and fell down a hillside, police said Monday.

It happened around 10 a.m. Sunday, in the Belmont hills area in the 1200 block of Chula Vista Drive, according to Belmont Police Captain Patrick Halleran.

"Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the driver, an 89 year-old woman who lives at the residence, already out of the overturned car," Halleran said in a news release.  "She was checked at the scene by Belmont Fire Department paramedics and found to be unhurt."

Halleran said the woman pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake as she was pulling into her carport.

"The woman's 2005 Subaru sedan struck a refrigerator that was against the back wall of the carport and both the refrigerator and the vehicle went through the wall, falling approximately 8 to 10 feet to the hillside below," he said.

The vehicle came to a rest on its hood, but the woman managed to crawl out before emergency crews arrived.

"It took tow trucks approximately five hours to remove the vehicle from the hillside," Halleran said.
