Dog Shot and Killed While Attacking Belmont Police Officer

A Belmont police officer was injured Thursday while responding to an irate man in the 2300 block of Coronet Boulevard. The officer was attacked by the man’s dog and had to shoot the dog to stop the attack.

Officers responded to the home at approximately 5:30pm, after several neighbors called 9-1-1 reporting the sounds of yelling and glass breaking from the residence.  When officers arrived they heard yelling and loud music coming from inside the house.  Officers contacted a 30-year-old male resident of the home, who was detained. 

As an officer was attempting to locate other occupants, “Magnum” a 6-year- old German shepherd ran out of the house and charged the officer.  The officer was able to fend off the dog’s initial attack, but the dog charged the officer a second time, where the dog bit into the officer’s leg.  At this point the officer was forced to defend himself and shot the dog once with his service pistol.  The dog later died.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was treated at the scene by Belmont Fire Department paramedics and was transported to San Mateo County Medical Center.  The officer was treated at the hospital and later released.  Another adult occupant of the home was also bitten by the dog during the incident, but declined medical aid.

There were no arrests and the incident is under investigation by the Belmont Police Department.
