Deer Capture Study Taking Place Near Belmont Neighborhood

Personnel from the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) will be using dart guns and walk-in traps to capture deer near the watershed area adjacent to the Hallmark neighborhood.

The is reminding residents, particularly those living in the Hallmark area and near the watershed, that the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) and UC Davis (UCD) are conducting a near Highway 280, between Woodside Road and Highway 92.

The initial capture of deer began on Friday Dec 2 and will continue through Sunday, December, 11.  The study is being conducted in an effort to learn how to reduce deer-vehicle collisions along Highway 280, by tracking deer movements and territory.

DFG and UCD researchers are using tranquilizer dart guns and walk-in net traps. The dart guns are rifles fitted with scopes.  After being tranquilized, the deer willbe fitted with radio collars to track their movements and then released.

Personnel involved in this study will be in DFG uniforms (tan shirt with insignia, green pants) and will be driving marked vehicles.  They will be accessing the watershed area from both Highway 280 and the Hallmark neighborhood during the week.
