On Friday at approximately 3:25 p.m., Belmont police and fire units responded to the 1200 block of Ralston Avenue, on a reported traffic collision involving a bicyclist.  While the incident is currently under investigation, the following is known at this time:

A 20-year-old Martinez man was riding a bicycle eastbound in the 1200 block of Ralston Avenue in heavy traffic.  As he was passing a van and trailer, the bicycle collided with the trailer.  The bicycle became entangled under the trailer and the bicycle and rider were dragged over 100 feet, until the bicycle and rider were dislodged when they struck the curb.

The driver of the van is cooperating with investigators and it appears that he may not have been immediately aware of the collision.  Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor.

The bicyclist was treated at the scene by Belmont Fire Department paramedics and was transported to an area hospital with undetermined injuries.

One eastbound lane in the 1200 block of Ralston Avenue was closed due to the collision and is expected to reopen at approximately 5:00 p.m.
