Crash at Ralston Ave. and Lassen Dr. Ties Up Traffic

Belmont police are still investigating the cause of the crash that sent one man to the hospital and severely damaged three cars.

A crash involving three cars has slowed traffic on eastbound and westbound Ralston Ave. near Lassen Dr. One man was taken to the hospital, the drivers of the other two vehicles were uninjured.

At this point, police don't know what caused the crash, but witnesses say it appeared that a late model BMW SUV was traveling eastbound on Ralston Ave. and for some reason attempted a u-turn near the corner of Lassen Dr., but crossed the median strip instead, hitting a large pole and a sprinkler head, veering into the westbound lane where he struck another car, causing that car to swerve into a third car.

The drivers of the other two cars were shaken, but not injured.

"We don't know why this happened,"  caused said Sgt. Robyn Pitts.

Police were on the scene directing traffic and looking into the cause of the accident. The BMW remains in the middle of the intersection. "We're waiting for the tow truck to move it," said Pitts. "There's a lot of traffic now up and down Ralston, so we've radioed the driver to come around on 280."
