Belmont Police Issue 99 Distracted Driving Citations in April

The Police Department joined other local agencies in cracking down on distracted drivers last month.

The Belmont Police Department on Friday released its results of last month's campaign.

Ninety-nine drivers were cited for various distracted driving-related citations, including 78 cell phone citations, 16 texting citations and five other citations, Belmont police Lt. Pat Halleran said.

The other citations included speeding, weaving or impeding traffic where the driver was distracted by grooming, eating, electronics or other diversions.

Cell phone stops also led to the arrest of two drivers, Halleran said. One was arrested on suspicion of driving with a suspended license and outstanding warrants, and the other was arrested for allegedly possessing narcotics.

The Belmont Police Department had joined more than 280 other law enforcement agencies in the first statewide Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
