Belmont Man Reports Mountain Lion Sighting on Hastings Drive

The big cat reportedly took off into the canyon on the western edge of Hastings Drive Monday evening.

A Belmont man told Belmont Patch that he almost hit a mountain lion on Monday evening driving up Hastings Drive.

The man, who asked his name not be used, said the big cat ran across the road into the open space just north of the crest of the Hastings Road hill at about 10:15 Monday evening.

"When I first saw it out of the corner of my eye, I thought it was a deer, but when it ran in front of the car I realized it was a lion. It was big and fast, with a very long tail. It was gone down into the canyon on the west side of the hill before I could hit the brakes," he said.

He added that the cat was dark brown in color, and that another one was spotted less than a mile away just a few hours earlier.

The man said he has contacted Belmont police, but has not had spoken with anyone at the department directly yet. This sighting has not been confirmed by authorities.

Belmont Patch will update this story when more information becomes available.
