Not Laurel Street, but…

Personally I don't want Laurel Street. I don't want to have to shower, brush my teeth or put on lipstick before strolling the shops.

Something like Laurel Street in San Carlos is too much, too big, for Belmont (in my humble opinion). Might take away the village-township feel of Belmont that we all love (or at least I do). But a smaller version of, say, Town & Country shopping center in Palo Alto would be a fine replacement for what’s happenin’ (or not happenin’) at Carlmont Shopping Center. Word on the street is that the rents @ Carlmont are astronomical and too many oldies but goodies have recently come and gone. Just ain’t right…. and happy to stand corrected if I’m off-base here, but seems it would behoove us all and our Belmont economy to have some new blood and tastes around here.

I picture underground parking, two levels+ of shops and dining and a little area to park our butts down and enjoy a latte from Starbucks, read the Comical or the local rags and enjoy a warm bagel from Docs. Simple, quaint, European feel with Belmont charm. Wouldn’t it be grand to have a Speedria-type pizza by the slice joint, a Jamba Juice that can afford to stay, an Indian restaurant like Curry-It-Up in San Mateo, a wine bar with exotic cheeses, a produce store with local organics, a Pub with pool tables, darts and an arcade and a mom & pop bookstore where you can sell your used books and stay all afternoon talking to the owners about what really matters? (Just to name a few… forget that beggars can’t be choosers.)

Bring in the mom & pops and let's support them.... we need more restaurants other than the few (delicious) options that have worked hard to cement themselves here. I'm guessing even the owners of these lovely establishments might like some diversity when they go out to eat in Belmont.

Personally I don’t want Laurel Street. Keep it downscaled but updated. I don’t want to have to shower, brush my teeth or put on lipstick before heading out to stroll the shops. I like that I can basically roll outta bed here and no one seems to care (or at least is kind enough not to tell me I smell).

Oh, and it’d be really great to have a(nother) Movie in the Park-type in the Barrett Park area – and why not throw in some local bands to boot? I’m sure the artists would lovingly share their area to create more of a neighborhood feel, right?

Now, finances…. who can bankroll this thing? I’ll help you market, free.
