Hurricane Season Ends Today

Roller coaster aficionados may want to head to Santa Cruz today, as a chapter in thrill rides comes to a close.

Monday, Labor Day, will be the last operating day of the famed Hurricane roller coaster at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.

After today's last ride, the 20-year-old coaster with the famous corkscrew drop will be dismantled and shipped to Western Playland Amusement Park in New Mexico.

The Hurricane will be replaced in 2013 with the Undertow, a coaster-style ride with cars that rotated while gliding down the track.

The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is located at 400 Beach St. in Santa Cruz. For more information, go to www.beachboardwalk.com/

Please come to the San Mateo City Council meeting tonight at 7:00 or shortly after and voice yourRead More concern about replacing our community's skating rink with a retail store. Bring something to read/do while we wait for our turn to speak. City of San Mateo 330 West 20th Avenue San Mateo, CA 94403 dina.artzt@comcast.net if you are interested in updates on our cause.

The City has spent time working with the developer, behind closed doors it would seem, yet inputRead More from the public was an afterthought due to MANY families showing up at a May 6 City Council Meeting (not on the Agenda, yet rink to close June 1 !) So many kids spoke so sincerely and eloquently how the closure would hurt them and their friends. Does San Mateo City Hall care about the residents of our community? Especially the children. City Hall has the upper hand (the Master Plan agreement), we expect them to step up. Why has City Hall allowed SPI to make the children of our community suffer so much agony and pain over this process? Shame on City Hall for letting this drag out !!

Eileen, you are heartily invited to visit the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Redwood City. WeRead More are a welcoming, caring group of about 177 people who find music, laughter, social, intellectual and social action pursuits to be eminently spiritual. Our services are at 10:30 a.m. Sundays at 2124 Brewster St. Best work advice at this time is to keep checking Craig's List, the Peninsula section, under both Etc. and part-time jobs.

Thanks for sharing, Ari!!!! It's been my experience that when you volunteer, you get back way moreRead More than you give! Thanks for the great example you are setting for us all.

Ari-Thanks for sharing the adventures of your volunteering projects! You are a great inspiration toRead More our entire community and we are all very proud to have you as a spokesperson on how volunteering can make a huge impact! Thank you very much! Keep on having fun!

Courtney, this is NOT a fact: I put up a comment that states a fact - not everyone will agree withRead More the Board's decisions, and that they have to make decisions that are good for the majority, not the minority. Part of that is fact and part of that is opinion. You are entitled to your opinion in which the minority group suffers. I'm entitled to my opinion, I'd like everybody, majority or minority, to be treated equally. If that means lottery system or whatever, OK. That's fair by me.

Just for perspective - There were no elementary schools in RS prior to the late 1990's and most RSRead More children went to Nesbit. After that Sandpiper opened and a few hundred students attended the first year, Now there are two schools in RS and around 800 (I think) attend those schools. The population mix in RS has changed over the years - toward many more school aged kids.

No, one of the points we're making is we were told during the no boundary decision "no boundaryRead More would NOT affect RWS (Sandpiper and RWSE). See, that's the difference, you were able to fight for what you wanted. You were able to voice your opinion and say, yes, I agree or disagree. RWS was told no boundaries would not affect us (see stuff from 2011, special note to the RWSE newsletter dated April 27, 2011). Now it's clearly impacting RWS. On top of that, these changes are things that are happening without warning, no notice so parents can plan accordingly. We are left with no options, no choices in the matter. I'm offended at your comments that the minority suffering is OK. I'm not offended at the board making decisions. I am concerned when these decisions are made and impacted members aren't alerted. Sure, you were willing to send your 4th grader to Nesbit. Ok, I might believe that. But, then why grandfather people in? That was what the majority was concerned about, no? So, as long as the minority suffer, the minority should shut up? The majority is all we care about. In that case, I'm against gay marriage. because that's the minority. No, I'm for equality for all! Minority or majority.

Was nice when children actually did chores and became responsible young adults with a part time jobRead More to manage finances.

Yes, it is fantastic Belmont is helping out at Barrett and the Belmont Llibrary on WednesdayRead More afternoons from 12:20 on. (This is more a question for the school district, why we have two full weeks before Thanksgiving break for conferences November 12 - 23, 2012 and two full weeks after winter break for conferences March 12 - 20, 2013. Parents are not even required to attend the March conferences, so why even have them. Just mail the report cards home and have two full weeks of school. Also, in most school districts conferences are handled in two days. Everyone has two days off of school and they are finished in two days. It does not go on for weeks on end of half days. I was shocked to hear this happened in the BRSSD.) Sorry for going off topic, Joan. I hope at some point Barrett can be torn down and fully renovated, but first the roads....
Kristina Turner May 1, 2013 at 12:47 pm
Agreed. Nice article about Barrett... but why are there so many "planning" andRead More "staff development" days? That's 50 afternoons that kids are missing out on school and their development. Ah, but this is supposed to be a positive article about how our community is working to deal with the shortcomings of our schools. So, thank you Barrett community center and Belmont libraries for taking these extra steps to keep these kids focused on something positive. Thanks for encouraging sports and physical activity as well.

The current situation is much worse because these are permanent assignments, not just one-yearRead More assignments.

We will be sharing the latest petition results with the board on May 2nd, so please show yourRead More support by signing if you haven't already. There are only 7 K seats available at Nesbit to handle all of Phase 2 and Phase 3 enrollment. Rather delaying the decision, the board should be proactive and approve the 4th K class at Sandpiper at the May 2nd meeting so that Sandpiper staff can prepare for that additional K class, and parents can move on to collaborating with the district on long term solutions for over-enrollment.
Linda April 28, 2013 at 03:34 pm
@haveapizza: As a RWS resident, I find your comment to be offensive, arrogant and completelyRead More unhelpful to the conversation. I've heard great things about Nesbit, and I would never presume that parents in that neighborhood care less or are less involved than parents at schools in RWS. If there's a discrepancy in test scores, it's due to the much higher percentage of English learners at Nesbit.

Seems like there is something wrong with this picture - two dogs being way too polite. The focus ofRead More their attention should be on those bones and the bones should be in less than pristine condition!
