Reducing Calories Extends Lives for Seniors

Calorie reduction can extend the life of Seniors. Belmont Seniors can visit the Farmer's Market or eat at the Twin Pines Cafe on Tues, Wed & Thurs at Twin Pines Senior & Community Center.

One of the advantages of studying for a masters in gerontology has one reading all sorts of articles pertaining to aging processes. In this week's class, the professor sent around The Okinawan Study. It was about reducing caloric intake extending lives for Seniors. The study of Okinawan Seniors proved that a diet high in fresh fruit and vegetables, along with protein, in less amounts than are normally consumed in the United States, has this group of people living well into their 100's. So before deciding to eat that doughnut, take a moment and ponder. One should always consult their physician before making any dietary changes because everyone's situation is different, but it just might be worth taking another look at what we are eating. Or, maybe we should move to Okinawa?

Belmont Seniors have an advantage because we have a wonderful Farmer's Market to buy fresh fruits and vegetables every weekend. The Twin Pines Senior & Community Center offers healthy and delicious meals at the Twin Pines Cafe every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Call to reserve at: 595-7444. Suggested donation is: $4.00 for anyone aged 60+. Come on and eat healthy and enjoy long life!
