Santa (and Friends) to Light Up Tree Tonight at Carlmont

The lighting the enormous tree at Carlmont Shopping Center tonight will signal Belmont's official kick-off to the holidays.

Over the decades, Lenore Griffin of the Carlmont Shopping Center Merchant's Association has lost track of how many holiday tree lightings the center has hosted, but she estimates Monday, Dec. 2, will be the fortieth-something-annual lighting.

The event will kickoff at 3:30 p.m. with a Holiday Boutique Fair, featuring artisans' displays of crafts and baked goods, followed by Santa'a arrival at 4:00.

At 5:00 p.m., the caroling begins, featuring choruses from six schools: Tri-School (Mercy, Notre Dame and Serra high schools), Immaculate Heart of Mary, and Central Elementary School.

And the big guy himself will do the honors and flip the switch to the holiday tree at 6:00 p.m. sharp, transforming an otherwise ordinary Monday night into a festive occasion at the Carlmont Shopping Center.
