Watch for Members of Belmont's 4-H Club This Weekend at Carlmont

Funds raised this weekend will go to help fix up the club's livestock farm of Crystal Springs Road.

Members of the Belmont 4-H Club are hoping to raise some money this weekend for the group's livestock farm by selling Krispy Kreme donuts and dog treats at the Carlmont Shopping Center.

On Saturday and Sunday, the local youth organization, comprised of boys and girls from Belmont and San Mateo, will be set up in front of Starbucks at Carlmont.

Club president Hanna Higdon explained that 4-H helps young people learn leadership skills and organization.

"We work on a wide variety of projects--science, engineering, technology and home economics like cooking and sewing, said Higdon, a student at Carlmont High School.

Sarah Tappin, a home-schooled high schooler added that 4-H also teaches life skills such as leadership and public speaking."

"And of course animals," added Tappin, who explained that the goal of the weekend fundraiser was to raise money for the club's farm, located on Crystal Springs Road.

"The main thing about 4-H is that you don't necessarily have to OWN an animal to learn about them," said Higdon.

"I participated in the poultry project, but didn't have a chicken. I learned how to hold them, care for them and show them," she said.

As of Saturday afternoon, the donut sales had cooled off a bit, but 4-H member Ian Colgan, a student at Abbott Middle School in San Mateo, said the morning had been busy with parents stopping by on their way to their kids' soccer games and loading up on dozens of donuts for the team.

The 4-H members will be out again on Sunday selling Krispy Kremes and dog treats from 8 a.m-4 p.m.
