Remember McGruff the Crime Dog?

Neighborhood Watch, National Night Out

McGruff's bark may have toned down but the sting from crime has not.

Truly safe neighborhoods are made up of informed residents who talk to each other and take the time to get to know local police.

It's pretty simple: -You watch out for me, I watch out for you-

Some street smarts help. Start with understanding how thieves operate. They take 1-minute looking for a way in and in less than 5-minutes they do a lot of damage. The emotional toll from burglary tops the charts according to the criminologists.

Don't be a victim and by all means don't -help- the criminal through the open garage door, or by providing a place to hide in unkept shrubs. 85% of burglars use first floor doors or windows to get in. They don't want you to see them anymore than you want to discover them lurking around.

They hate noise, lights, reinforced entry points and occupied homes. Make your 'Crib' look lived in. Above-reach motion lights are the best bang for the buck. Some pretty solid dual-lamp, 20-year-life LED security flood lights sell for $80 bucks. I like Lithonia brand myself.
