SMC Library in Agreement With Decision to Pull Out of Forum

The Library says it had no knowledge of a mailer distributed by the Belmont Chamber of Commerce.

A representative from the San Mateo County Library confirmed on Thursday that it has withdrawn its sponsorship from the Belmont Chamber of Commerce's Candidate's Forum scheduled for Thursday evening.

The forum, which was originally co-sponsored by the Chamber, the League of Women Voters, and the Belmont Library, is now down to one sole participant--the Belmont Chamber of Commerce.

In an email to Belmont Patch, Anne-Marie Despain, Director of Library Services, for the San Mateo County Library system, said, "The San Mateo County Library agrees with the decision made by the League of Women Voters to cancel its participation in tonight’s candidates’ forum at the Belmont Library. It was our understanding that this event was intended to be completely non-partisan.  The Library had no knowledge of and does not endorse the flyer distributed by the Belmont Chamber of Commerce."
