League of Women Voters and Library Back Out of Candidate Forum

As of Thursday afternoon, the forum is still going to take place according to representatives from the Belmont Chamber of Commerce.

The League of Women Voters and the Friends of Belmont Library have both withdrawn from tonight's Belmont City Council Candidate's Forum.

Patch is confirming the reasons for the withdrawal, but sources say that it is due to a mailer sent out by the Belmont Chamber of Commerce last week that the LWV and Friends of the Belmont Library perceived as an improper attempt to influence the content of the debate.

All six Belmont City Council candidates have been informed by the LWV and the Friends of the Belmont Library of their withdrawal. As of Thursday afternoon, chamber reprentatives say the forum will proceed at the scheduled time, 7-9 p.m. in the Taube Room of the Belmont Library.

It is unclear at this time who will moderate the forum, or who will script the questions for the candidates.

Belmont Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.
