A Belmont woman coming back to her apartment interrupted a burglar early Saturday morning. According to Belmont Police Department spokesperson, Captain Patrick Halleran, the burglar fled and the woman was not injured.

Police say on Saturday at about 4:00 a.m., a 22-year-old woman entering her apartment encountered a man in the front room of her apartment in the 100 block of Irene Court. The victim told police the suspect fled out the front door and was last seen running north across Irene Court.

Investigating officers conducted an area search for the suspect, but did not locate him. A pair of women’s underwear was found a short distance from the apartment, along the suspect’s route. Police say it appears that they were taken from the victim’s apartment and dropped by the suspect as he fled. Nothing else was taken from the apartment and there was no sign of forced entry.

The suspect is described as a white male adult in his late 20’s to early 30’s, approximately 5’9” to 5’10” tall, with a medium build and described as having a square upper body. He has short brown hair that is slightly longer on the top than the sides. The suspect was wearing a blue short-sleeve t- shirt with a V-neck or scoop neck and blue jeans.

With the recent hot weather, the Belmont police are reminding residents to close and lock all ground level windows and doors and garage doors at night, or whenever they leave home.

Police say it’s also a good idea to leave a front and back porch light on as well. Warm temperatures can make sleeping uncomfortable at night, prompting residents to keep windows and doors cracked open allowing cool night air into the home. Leaving windows and doors open at night creates an open invitation for someone to enter your home.
