Walking the Line: DUI Message Heard Loud and Clear

The results are in from the Belmont Police Department's DUI checkpoint over Memorial Day weekend.

Law enforcement agencies in California were out in full force this past weekend, from Friday at 6 p.m. until Monday at midnight looking for drivers who make the mistake of partying too hard before getting behind the wheel.

And, according to police statistics, it appears most motorists heeded the call not to drink and drive.

Belmont police held a DUI Checkpoint on Sunday, May 26 from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., in the 1300 block of El Camino Real (near O'Neill Avenue). The checkpoint was staffed by officers from the Belmont, San Mateo, Foster City and Daly City Police Departments.

The following are the statistics from the checkpoint:

  • 973 vehicles were screened thought the checkpoint
  • 8 drivers were given field sobriety tests
  • 4 drivers were arrested for being unlicensed
  • 3 drivers were arrested for driving on a suspended driver’s license
“Our message was simple, you drive impaired we will arrest you," cautioned Belmont Police Chief Dan DeSmidt.

“We are glad to see that driver’s in our community appear to have gotten the message.” added the Chief.
