Tap Water to Appear Murky But Quality will Meet Standards

Hetch Hetchy pipeline will be upgraded, and cause service disruption.

 

Drinking water in the Peninsula may appear opaque as local reservoirs will quench customers instead of the Hetch Hetchy reservoir. 

Starting Dec. 5, local water treatment at the Sunol Valley Water Treatment Plant in the East Bay will cause the cloudiness, as air will mix with the water. But the change will not affect quality, according to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.

The SFPUC is seismically upgrading the San Joaquin pipeline in the Central Valley, which transports the Yosemite water to the Bay Area. It expects to complete repairs by the end of the month, and customers should expect drinking water to return to normal by Jan. 7, 2012.
