Boil Water Advisory Issued for Residents on Belburn Drive

Crews from Mid-Peninsula Water District and the City of Belmont are repairing a sewer water main break and delivering fresh water to residents in the 1800 block of Belburn Drive.

A water main break in a Belmont neighborhood Monday afternoon has prompted the Mid-Peninsula Water District (MPWD) to issue a water quality emergency notification.

According to MPWD general manager Tammy Rudock, customers in the 1800 block of Belburn Drive (between Academy Ave. and Avon St.) should use boiled water or bottled water for drinking and cooking purposes as a safety precaution. Water should be boiled for at least 15 minutes before using.

Note: MPWD stresses this emergency notice is for homes in the 1800 block of Belburn Drive only.

For residents who do not have gas or electricity, alternative methods to purify water are as follows:

1. Use unscented liquid household bleach (Clorox, Purex, etc). Add 8 drops of bleach per gallon of clear tap water or 16 drops per gallon of cloudy tap water, mix thoroughly, and let stand for 30 minutes before using. A chlorine-like taste and odor will result from this purification procedure and is an indication that adequate disinfection has taken place.

2. Use water purification tablets following the manufacturers instructions.

Rudock says water district and city crews are working to repair the damaged water main and are delivering water to residents at this time.

Water district officials warn that failure to follow this advisory could result in stomach or intestinal illness.

Rudock says the Mid-Peninsula Water District will notify customers as soon as it is determined that tap water is safe to drink.

“Once we take our water sample to the lab first thing tomorrow morning, it will be at least 24 hours before we release the boil water advisory,” said Rudock.

She stressed that only the homes on Belburn Drive are affected by the water main break.
