Ralston Ave. Petition Makes Nightly News

As of Friday afternoon, petition to make Ralston Avenue Safer has 595 signatures.

As reported in Belmont Patch earlier this week, a petition to make Ralston Avenue a safer road for cyclists and pedestrians has been picking up steam among members of the community and the media.

A segment that aired Thursday night on NBC Bay Area highlighted some of the safety issues along Ralston. Several Belmont residents and the petition's author, Mike Swire, were interviewed.

Swire told NBC Bay Area that he has a suggestion for handling the problem: "Give me a bike lane and I get out of your way so you can get where you need to go."

According to the NBC report, the Belmont City Council has hired a firm to conduct a traffic study, the results of which are expected to be available later this summer.

Belmont Mayor Christine Wozniak told NBC that she expects some spirited debate, but says changes are in the works for Ralston Avenue and those who use it.
