Update 7:34 p.m.: Police say a "large part" of Belmont lost power tonight, based on the volume of calls they are receiving. The cause is still unknown.
Update 7:28 p.m.: According to the PG&E Electrical Systems Outage Map, between 500 and 4,999 customers in Belmont lost power. Check back on Belmont Patch for more updates.
7:25 p.m.: PG&E customers in Belmont lost power tonight for about half an hour. The cause of the outage is not immediately known. Power was restored to some customers at about 7:20 p.m.
Many stores were darkened throughout town, including the Safeway on El Camino Real and the nearby Starbucks.
