Police Identify Suspect in Possible Sexual Assault

A 23-year-old San Mateo man is being questioned by police about the incident, which occurred at the Motel 6 in Belmont.

Belmont police are trying to determine if an unconscious 19-year-old woman found lying on the ground near the pool of Motel 6 last Thursday was the victim of a drug overdose, a sexual assault--or both.

On May 23, at about 2:15 a.m., Belmont police and fire units responded to a report of a possible drug overdose at the Motel 6 on Shoreway Road. Upon arrival, offers discovered the victim, a 19-year-old San Mateo woman on the ground near the pool.

Initial information lead officers to believe the woman had been sexually assaulted. The woman was treated at the scene by Belmont Fire Department paramedics and transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators determined that the woman had been at the motel with a 23 year old San Mateo man. The man was located and interviewed by Belmont Police detectives.

Upon processing the motel room where the incident had occurred, crime scene investigators found evidence of drug and alcohol use.

Police say case is still under investigation and will be submitted to the San Mateo County District Attorney for review for possible charges.
