National Night Out: Lock Up, Step Out, Meet Your Neighbors

This year's National Night Out is Tuesday, Aug. 6. This nationwide event began in the 1970s as a way to get people out of their homes and meet each other with the common purpose of making communities safer by raising crime prevention awareness.

With the theme “See Something, Say Something,” this year’s National Night Out will serve as reinforcement of the message the Belmont Police Department has been spreading after a series of residential burglaries this past spring.

National Night Out 2013 (NNO) will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at nine locations throughout Belmont.

According to Belmont PD, the purpose of NNO is for residents to get to know their neighbors beyond a friendly wave or a quick hello.

Police emphasize that getting to know one’s neighbors is a great crime-fighting tool.

“You don’t necessarily have to have dinner together every night,” said Capt. Pat Halleran. "But get to know your neighbors.”
