Dumbarton Work On Schedule; Bridge Expected to Reopen Tuesday

The Dumbarton Bridge has been closed since Friday night for seismic upgrade and maintenance work.

Caltrans officials said Sunday that is on track and the bridge is expected to reopen by Tuesday morning as scheduled.

The bridge closed Friday at 10 p.m. to allow Caltrans to replace an expansion joint on the eastern side of the bridge with a state of the art seismic joint and to conduct maintenance work. The retrofit is proceeding on schedule and should be completed by 5 a.m. Tuesday at the latest, Ney said.

Maintenance work now being completed includes painting, litter removal, clearing of plant material, work on the pedestrian walk-over and fence repair, as well as repair work around the toll plaza.

The retrofit project has been in progress since the summer of 2010 and will be 90 percent complete after this weekend's project, according to Caltrans.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, the entire bridge was also closed to retrofit the main deck on the west end of the bridge and put a new joint, allowing the deck to move 42 inches in a seismic event.

The weekend closure will be the last full shutdown of the Dumbarton Bridge during the project, according to Caltrans.
