Bay Area Traffic Deaths Rise Over Holiday Weekend

Statewide arrests for driving under the influence are lower than a year ago.

By Bay City News

The number of fatal collisions in the Bay Area over the Memorial Day holiday weekend is up, but DUI arrests are down so far from last year’s numbers, according to the California Highway Patrol.
In a report provided by the CHP, officers in the Bay Area made 117 arrests from Friday through Sunday morning.  A year ago 136 arrests were made, according to the report.

Two accidents in the Bay Area this weekend were fatal, the CHP said. A year ago, just one crash was fatal.

Statewide, there were 826 arrests made by the CHP for driving under the influence, the CHP said. That number is down from 845 DUI drivers arrested in 2012.

Across the state, fatalities are up from five in 2012 to 12 this year.
