Survey: Girls Text More Than Boys While Driving

Are your thoughts in line with a CSAA report? Take our poll below.

Teen girls are more likely to be using a cell phone or other electronic device while they're driving than their male counterparts.

That's the conclusion of a new study from the California State Automobile Association.

Researchers at the AAA Foundation of Traffic Safety used in-car video footage to study distracted driving among teens.

They found teenage girls are twice as likely as teenage boys to be calling, texting or Internet surfing while they are driving.

We've attached a poll to this story, asking for your opinion on distracted driving.

The AAA researchers also found the presence of other passengers as well as the time of day to be factors in crashes involving teen drivers.

The research also revealed teen girls are 10 percent more likely to be engaged in other distracting behaviors, such as reaching for an object or eating.

However, boys were found to be more likely to talk to someone outside their vehicle or to turn around and chat with passengers.

“Drivers are three times as likely to take their eyes off the road when using electronic devices. They were also two and a half times more likely to look away from the road when engaged in other behaviors.” says Cynthia Harris, spokeswoman for CSAA. “A second may not seem like much, but at 65 miles per hour a car travels the length of a basketball court in a single second. That extra second can mean the difference between life and death.”

AAA offers the following tips for parents who have teen drivers:

  • Practice, practice, practice. Once teens have their actual license, continue to ensure that basic skills are mastered and to introduce varied driving conditions such as snow and heavy traffic rural roads with an experienced driver in the passenger seat.
  • Keep passengers out. Teen drivers’ crash risks multiply with teenage passengers in the vehicle. Set limits and enforce them consistently.
  • Limit night driving. Reduced visibility makes night driving riskier for drivers of all ages. For inexperienced teens it’s even harder. Allow new teen drivers to drive at night only if it’s truly necessary for them to practice driving in the dark with a parent.
  • Keep setting rules. Establish and enforce rules above and beyond state laws. In addition to night and passenger limits, set rules for inclement weather, highways, cities, or other driving conditions in which a teen has not gained enough experience. Find a parent-teen agreement on TeenDriving.aaa.com that can help.

Police say distracted drivers come in all ages and are both male and female. They note that the California Vehicle Code prohibits texting and other behavior while a car is being operated. That includes a vehicle that is stopped at a red light or even one that is parked while the engine is still running.

I'm surprised that so many people are still texting and driving. This is more dangerous and more stupid than drinking and driving.

The urge to text is stronger than a person sometimes.

Teen girls on the phone or texting? Impossible! Say it isn't so ... ;)
Vanessa Castañeda (Editor) March 28, 2012 at 05:48 pm
Lol. This is why I bestow the title of navigator to whoever is in the passenger seat, for both texts and google maps. Question is: does using voice dictated text creation make the roads safer? (Sometimes its easier to text someone that you're almost there.)
Alan Dale Brown March 28, 2012 at 06:07 pm
Studies have claimed that hands-free phone calling isn't that much safer than using a handset; it's the distraction that matters. Surprisingly enough, use of a radio improves safety, and talking to others in the car isn't as bad as using a handsfree phone. It's a matter of how much these things take someone's mind off a road. A voice-activated dictation device would seem to be safer than typing text; I've never seen a study on that.

Use of a radio improves safety? Guess they haven't seen my friend Shannon get down to her jam in the car. Hands free headsets consistently inspire people on the other end to say, "What?!" in my experience.
Alan Dale Brown March 28, 2012 at 07:49 pm
It's an average, Vanessa. People who use the radio to stay alert while driving more than offset those who are banging their head on the dashboard to Metallica. It's all in the mathematics. :)

I saw the ultimate ti-fecta once. This was a thing of beauty. At the intersection of Primrose and Burlingame Ave, a woman driver, on a phone mind you, made a u turn in am attempt grab a parking spot taken before she was able to get there, then proceeded to hang another u turn in the middle of Bgame Ave. to grab another spot without the competence to hit it the first time Took her a 3 point turn to make it.. All this in front of a police cruiser. Made my day seeing her get that ticket. Good for about $750.00 maybe.

Thanks Joan - there is one in the sub-head of the blog I posted on School-Force Voices today; wouldRead More love if it could be corrected. Been scratching my head til I saw this post :)

Sorry about that! There's nothing I can do on my end----it's system-wide bug, which I believe isRead More fixed now. :)

I also preferred the 'old' Patch - this format makes it difficult to find articles that are aren'tRead More that old. One example was the informative article on who was running for city Council. I was having problems finding it and finally had to query on a candidate's name to find. I don't recall having that issue with the original format. Also our neighborhood had a water break line and we were without water for some hours a few Sundays ago. I tried to find out the reason for the break (because of construction or old pipes?) and could not find anything on the Patch regarding this. Not sure if they just didn't report or I just couldn't find.

Not crazy about the new Patch either. Also, I want to post-for sale, and this section is crowdedRead More with announcements, etc.

Another thing that needs to be fixed: When you go to leave a comment, it takes you over to whereRead More you have to sign in, you sign in expecting to be returned to the article on which you are commenting, but it, instead, takes you back to some different article. PLEASE FIX THIS!!!! Also, please reinstate the feature where we can sign up to be notified if/when more comments are made concerning the article(s) we've commented on so we can follow the conversation. Thank you.

what do the local Belmont restaurants think of this? do these people pay a license to the city?
Joan S. Dentler (Editor) June 4, 2013 at 07:15 am
Hi Don....thanks for your question. Yes, Off the Grid does pay a licensing fee to the city, and soRead More far, we haven't heard any concerns by local restaurants. The food trucks provide an option to a traditional restaurant---pick up and go----and they are only around 4-5 hours per week (on Mondays, typically not a big restaurant night anyway). Have you tried the food yet?
