8U Softball Team Pride of Belmont-Redwood Shores

The Belmont Blast roared back for two big wins in a Redwood City tournament last weekend.

The 8U (8 and Under) Belmont Blast put on a clinic of softball play and teamwork as they won the Redwood City Summer Slam Softball Tournament last weekend.

The girls have been working hard at their game, practicing twice a week and playing in tournaments all summer. Their efforts paid off this weekend as they played six tough games on the way to the championship.

The team started out with two wins and one close loss on Saturday. But they
roared back for big wins against two tough teams--the San Bruno Storm and the Benicia Outlaws. Every player made a contribution, with Jazzy Wong playing a hard-nosed second base, Sammy Iffla getting on in her leadoff role, and Charlotte Cicero making strong contributions at third and in the outfield.

Beating the Storm took excellent arms in the outfield from Jasleen Singh and Sofie Hai and strong play from catcher Siona Halwani.

The Championship Game was an intense, close affair that the Blast won
2-1.

The teams played to a standstill until Savannah Velschow broke out a triple to left center and Audrey Swenson brought her home with a double. Kristen Conliffe held down the infield at shortstop while Bridget Matthews was a wall at first base and pitched an excellent third inning.

Then Madeline Cunningham was brought in to save the game. In a truly brave performance--coming back after being hit by a line drive--Cunningham struck out the last batter with the tying run on third.

It was a great weekend and the 8U Belmont Blast played in a way that should make our community proud.
