Thoughts about Koret Field and Council Decision

Mayor Coralin Feierbach shares her thoughts on the council's decision regarding NDNU's Koret Field use.

Welcome to my new blog!

On Tuesday night the to amend the NDNU CUP allowing the two sports groups, Belmont United Soccer Club and Belmont/Redwood Shores AYSO to use the Koret Field of NDNU.

A CUP (Conditional Use Permit) is like a variance except that a variance is an exemption from the zoning code and a CUP is an exemption from the allowed usage of the property.

It has been 2 years of going back and forth with the Planning Commission, the City Council, back to the Planning Commission and finally on September 13, the Council approved allowing the two sports group to use the field.

Belmont Residents for a Tranquil Community, composed of about 35 residents feel that the noise emanating from the university has been, and is continuing to be a problem. The noise from air horns, loud music, and crowd cheering travels up the south side of Ralston Ave.

On the other hand, there are residents who are not bothered by these sounds at all.

The members of Belmont Residents for a Tranquil Community have been unfortunately and unfairly criticized for being “against children”. But what is music to some, is noise to others.

The spokesperson for the two sports groups informed the council that they are willing to meet with the residents on a regular basis to see if they can resolve any future problems.

In speaking to the university after the hearing, they too seem to be willing to do the same thing in conjunction with the sports groups.

I congratulate both for reaching out to make things better for everyone.

If the residents, university, and both sports groups can meet on a regular basis at NDNU’s site, I strongly believe that it would help alleviate the situation tremendously.

(Incidentally Notre Dame High School also has scheduled meetings with the adjacent residents for some time now and it has worked out very well after initial neighborhood complaints.)

Hopefully some day soon, the police won’t have to be called by any complaining residents. Instead, the residents will have someone to contact, a real person at NDNU to help work out their problems.

I actually do believe that this can happen!
