A real pharmacy focused on health-related products (not trying to be a gift shop), sports/outdoor store with activewear clothing, a crafts/hobby shop -- all would be a nice fit with our upscale family and senior population in the Carlmont area.
Sad that so many focus on businesses already served (or overserved) here...if an existing business isn't working well for you, talk or drop a note to the owner. Surprising how well that works. :>) Michael

As I rethink my previous comment...
How about Lorenzo's moves across the street and Subway goes? That way we get a great deli. According to my daughter : "Lorenzo's rocks". As to the sports bar... I think the beauty supply store (or is it an optometrist or is it both) can move to one of the vacant spots. Then Village Host can go to make room for a sports bar that takes up the entire outer building.

Would love a bakery to get coffee and pastries and some good breads. Also some place that is open later for coffee since every thing else closes so early. Something like Central Perk on friends. :)

I just miss the Pine Brook Inn.
Joan S. Dentler (Editor) February 28, 2012 at 10:05 pm
Ah, yes, the Pine Brook. Anyone else "pine" for this great old German restaurant?
Rj February 28, 2012 at 10:45 pm
Bring PBI, deans, the donut shop and hallmark

Belmont based microbrewery, Devils Canyon, is rumored to be doing site selection for their first brew pub. DC is family owned with great employees. Imagine a locally owned version of Gordon Biersch in a spot like say, Village Host. My fav beverage from DC is their home made, alcohol free root beer!

Those are some great ideas Steve. Have you ever considered applying for a spot on the planning commission?
Steve Hayes February 28, 2012 at 11:24 pm
I like the idea of outdoor eating - it would be great if they could get the nursery to give up about 40 - 50 feet - the area under Holas on both sides of the creek. A perfect spot (protected from the wind) to sip a few margaritas and have a candlelight dinner.
The other thing I have noticed is the underutilization of space in that shopping area. I live near "downtown" Belmont but hell will freeze over before "downtown" will ever develop. So I am resigned to the idea that CS center should be our downtown - but we need more stores and some sort of parking structures. The entire area running behind the store area could have more stores. Also the area to the south of Lunardis could be developed (or perhaps the nursery could move over there and stores could replace the nursery. A shopping area along the creek could be a wonderful - a minature Ketchikan river district without fish.

I agree too! I also miss the Hallmark shop!
cwyatt February 28, 2012 at 11:52 pm
Yes, a Hallmark shop and a tea store would be amazing!
cwyatt February 28, 2012 at 11:53 pm
Sorry but I don't agree with this one. We have enough pet stores nearby!
cwyatt February 28, 2012 at 11:56 pm
Yes, I grew up going to that restaurant. Belmont was famous for it! I also celebrated my 5th wedding anniversary there and really miss it. I like Mexican but Holas is not my favorite.

With Hillsdale Mall so close, it's not worthwhile to bring in clothing shops, shoe shops, or other such typical stores. What Carlmont Shopping center has going for it, is that locals want a place to hang out. To sip coffee. To eat dinner. To have a drink. To meet up with friends, or a place for the kids to hang out after school... and this place is right near a major intersection, a school, a library, a park that locals frequent... So any place that promotes social lingering would be best for this area - and any effort to improve the views and seating areas (need more) would be along those lines. The ideas for a bakery and donut shop are great. We could even have more restaurants. For a great burger, we go to Godfather's. Hot Pot? Little Sheep in San Mateo. Yes, we drive for food - and if great food is in Belmont, people will drive here too. San Carlos and Palo Alto have foodie reputations - we want that too. Food does really well here on the peninsula. Even a picnic area for Lunardi's purchases would be good.
For some reason, Carlmont feels like a smaller version of Town & Country in Palo Alto to me. With that in mind, what I like there is Day One (we need one here!!), the local bookstore with great kids' books, and Sur la Table. As cool as the art stores, paper shops, and consignment shops might be, I've never bought those items (a little too expensive or luxurious). Perhaps a craft shop would be a fit here; a small Michael's? Any chance Devils Canyon could move in too?
Joan S. Dentler (Editor) February 29, 2012 at 01:30 am
Great points Kristina....having a place to hang out seems to be the common thread here. There are some other vacant store fronts around Belmont, which we'll get some feedback on in future Patch polls. And, yes, Devil's Canyon is looking for a new home in Belmont--in a more visible location. So many possibilities!
Cheryl February 29, 2012 at 03:51 am
Yes, loved the atmosphere and food, would love to see a bakery with seating and lots of homemade goodies.
Anita February 29, 2012 at 04:08 am
Vans shoe store & skateboards would do great there with all the schools around there! Specialty's Bakery would be another plus with fresh bread & pastries. Papyrus card & stationary would be good too.
Nicola February 29, 2012 at 02:28 pm
I agree with Kristina. What Belmont/Carlmont Shopping Center needs more of are places to hang out and connect with others. Somewhere were we can get a simple bite to eat, a scone, a tea, a coffee, or a beer. A place with wifi so you can get some work done on your computer while sipping your coffee or beer...and do that at 10pm at night. If you know The Grove restaurant in San Francisco's marina or filmore districts, that's what I'm thinking of. But heck, if Devil's Canyon opens their brew pub in Carlmont Shopping Center that would be a huge win.
TMC February 29, 2012 at 02:58 pm
Yes, I miss the "pine".
Annette February 29, 2012 at 04:18 pm
Loved Pine Brook. We used to go all the time. Best wienerscnitzel!
Annette February 29, 2012 at 04:21 pm
Anita, Vans is opening in HIllsdale. But for sure a bakery. I was at Panera the other day and thought Carlmont could use something like that.
TMC February 29, 2012 at 04:31 pm
Sur la Table would be great although am guessing the one vacant space might be too small for them. Would love to see Devil's Canyon at what is soon to be the former Blockbuster building. Wouldn't that be great? Would love to see more "spilling out" on the sidewalks at Carlmont. That becomes very inviting for hanging out and gathering space. Lunardi's ought to open up that section of the store that seems coldly closed off from the rest of the center. It's too bad their deli is at the other end of the store, as it would make for a great segue to the rest of the shops by moving the deli to the north end and opening up the store to an outside sitting area.
Joan S. Dentler (Editor) February 29, 2012 at 04:41 pm
The common theme here seems to be an gathering spot with outdoor seating for food, coffee, drinks--and someplace that doesn't "roll up the sidewalks" at 8 p.m. Whether at Carlmont Shopping Center or elsewhere in Belmont, it's clear folks would like to have a place to meet up with friend or bring the kids after a baseball or soccer game. I hope Belmont City Council is listening!
Ken G February 29, 2012 at 05:15 pm
I'm INN for Pine Brook!
Steve Hayes February 29, 2012 at 05:15 pm
" I hope Belmont City Council is listening!"
It is clear many people would lke outdoor eating space. As Shalizaar and Cafe Mossant were going through the planning process both wanted to offer patrons with outdoor eating space. Essentially both of the requests were rejected by the Belmont Planning Commission - the way they did that was by imposing so many stupid requirements that the owners simply gave up. I understand the planning process has improved (I was disgusted by the process and stopped watching) but at least in the past the focus was on what applicants Could Not do rather than the focus of what applicants Could do. Our town has been handicapped by the narrow minded and overly restrictive planning process.
TMC February 29, 2012 at 06:12 pm
city council has nothing to do with tenants at Carlmont.
Senta February 29, 2012 at 06:32 pm
true, but city council does have something to do with making Belmont business-friendly. i'm happy to hear they are working on improving their policies.
carlmont shopping center has very high rent, which is why Dolly's Treasures had to move. seeing that the shopping center is really our only downtown, it's painful to see those spots empty. i wonder if the council should or could do any negotiating with the owner so it can encourage businesses, esp. small businesses to move in. and i like village host a lot and it seems well supported when i go there, i don't think i'm the only one. i would hate to see it close!
Senta February 29, 2012 at 06:39 pm
yes, it was very special. i do like Hola! too, but it's just not the same.
Jo Delgado March 5, 2012 at 03:46 pm
Many of our friends also miss Jamba Juice..I think the shopping center made a mistake to let them go and put in a Yogurt shop when there is one across the street. We are trying to support each other right? What about a good bakery serving cakes, pies, donuts, cookies, and homemade bread.

Thanks Joan - there is one in the sub-head of the blog I posted on School-Force Voices today; wouldRead More love if it could be corrected. Been scratching my head til I saw this post :)
Joan S. Dentler (Editor) June 16, 2013 at 11:20 am
Sorry about that! There's nothing I can do on my end----it's system-wide bug, which I believe isRead More fixed now. :)
Belmont96 June 13, 2013 at 09:40 am
I also preferred the 'old' Patch - this format makes it difficult to find articles that are aren'tRead More that old. One example was the informative article on who was running for city Council. I was having problems finding it and finally had to query on a candidate's name to find. I don't recall having that issue with the original format. Also our neighborhood had a water break line and we were without water for some hours a few Sundays ago. I tried to find out the reason for the break (because of construction or old pipes?) and could not find anything on the Patch regarding this. Not sure if they just didn't report or I just couldn't find.

Not crazy about the new Patch either. Also, I want to post-for sale, and this section is crowdedRead More with announcements, etc.

Another thing that needs to be fixed: When you go to leave a comment, it takes you over to whereRead More you have to sign in, you sign in expecting to be returned to the article on which you are commenting, but it, instead, takes you back to some different article. PLEASE FIX THIS!!!! Also, please reinstate the feature where we can sign up to be notified if/when more comments are made concerning the article(s) we've commented on so we can follow the conversation. Thank you.

what do the local Belmont restaurants think of this? do these people pay a license to the city?
Joan S. Dentler (Editor) June 4, 2013 at 07:15 am
Hi Don....thanks for your question. Yes, Off the Grid does pay a licensing fee to the city, and soRead More far, we haven't heard any concerns by local restaurants. The food trucks provide an option to a traditional restaurant---pick up and go----and they are only around 4-5 hours per week (on Mondays, typically not a big restaurant night anyway). Have you tried the food yet?
