Verizon to Open Store in Upcoming Days

The Carlmont Village Shopping Center will undergo another face lift, as Verizon has taken the place of Carlmont Pharmacy.

The Carlmont Village Shopping Center will see even more change this summer, as the Verizon store is set to open in the site previously occupied by the .

Carlmont Shopping Center Operations manager Ivano Pellegrini said on Thursday that Verizon will open its doors within the next few days. He also revealed a chiropractor will fill the site previously occupied by the pet store, .

There have been several vacancies in the shopping center recently, as it has now been confirmed that will take the place of Jamba Juice, still leaving two vacancies on the lot.

Pellegrini, who has been at his post for 18 years, commented that turnovers are commonplace and that the recent string of vacancies deals mainly with the poor state of the economy.

“We have turnovers,” said Pellegrini. “We have 32 stores here. You’re bound to have some vacancies, although we have not had a lot of vacancies in prior years. But the economy isn’t good.”

As much as I like the idea that Carlmont have more home town types of shops, it will be nice to not have to drive to RWC or Foster City to get things needed at Verizon. Hoping it won't be as busy either since it probably will be smaller location!

That's so odd to have a chiropractor in the shopping center. That sounds a bit desperate. I could see it if it were located up where they have the offices, but as part of the mix of consumer type shops? Uh uh. Bad idea.
The rumor I've heard for years is that the rents at Carlmont Shopping Center are the highest of any similar type center on the Peninsula, which would of course end up in a higher than normal turnover among tenants, let alone when the economy slows down.

Verizon, great another blow to the mom & pop stores. Couldn't we get some local business to fill the place instead of some corporate giant, not very inviting for the community.
Becket Feierbach June 25, 2011 at 08:02 pm
Really? A Verizon store? Gee, that serves the community well. How about a bakery that sells really good bread? Or a smallish sporting-good store? Or a stylish shop for children (e.g toys, clothing, baby supplies)? Or a sweet shop that sells cakes and cupcakes? Or a kitchen supply store that gives cooking lessons? You get the picture. But now we're stuck with a store that has absolutely no connection with the surrounding community. Oh, and by the way, there's already a Verizon store in Belmont next to the Safeway on the El Camino. Great.

Is it still open? I was pleased when they opened in Carlmont. There is precious little evidence that other typess of stores are wiling to move in here such as Bakeries, sweet shops, toy stores, computer stores, etc., have

Dear YosemiteLover,
How many cell phones does the average person need? Not sure how long you've lived in Belmont, but places like Knutsen's bakery did perfectly fine here for 20+ years. So did Dean's toy store. These are the stores of my childhood and I would like to have similar stores in which to shop which/for my children. It's a shame that I have to go to San Carlos - because I would like to keep the tax $ here in Belmont. I guess I can always get a jump on the inevitable and buy my 2 yr old a cell phone from the Verizon store.

BTW, the store that replaced the pharmacy is still open; I was there to nite. I have been here since 1984, so I have been here a while. Belmont has been well off the mark for building a community business center, as in San Carlos. We have not had a city government, or planning commission, that have been the least bit aggressive in getting business to come to Belmont; actually, I would argue that we put up barriers add infinite item. Building regulations, an onerous planning commission with untold ability to find reasons some new building won't meet our regulations. There is a considerable sentiment in Belmont to not change, not move into the future and all of the adaptions that implies; that sentiment is pretty effective in carrying the day. The surrounding cities have more forward, with San Carlos and San Mateo leading the parade; they get a lot of tax revenue that we could have earned had we taken a more progressive path. It is not a privilege to do business in our city as many seem to think; it is a privilege to have a business want to do business in Belmont. Belmont has changed a lot since your childhood days I would think; do you think we have changed for the better? Good for you to have such fond memories. I'm not so crazy about where I came from, a backwards operation if ever there was one; it finally did change into a dynamo of a city and now Salt Lake is a pretty happening place, even in Utah.

Hi YosemiteLover,
Thanks for your response. I agree that Belmont missed out on some key business opportunities - and these opportunities were snapped up by our neighboring communities. We desperately need an "economic developer" at City Hall - someone whose sole purpose is to bring new businesses to Belmont and cut through red tape. In my opinion, that would be a key first step. But, there are some ways in which Belmont has improved since 1984. Ralston Ave. is far more beautiful than it was when I was a child. The houses have improved and the trees/rocks down the center divider are gorgeous. We have 3 very good Italian restaurants. Our schools (especially Carlmont) are much, much better than when I went to them. We have a new bike bridge connects Oracle/Audi to Stering Downs - making it possible for folks to commute by bike. But I agree that it's not enough. And I agree that there have been some illogical, and not always consistent barriers to economic development. If you have an idea for a particular business to come to Belmont, I implore you to write to the City Council. Contrary to popular belief, all 5 members do read your mail and do listen. But, they can't hear you unless you speak up. :) Take care, Becket (resident off and on since 1974)

First thing I would ask is who did you talk you, and have you followed up? Was this something youRead More got in writing? Did they give you a timeline that has lapsed?
Steve Hayes June 19, 2013 at 12:54 pm
The practical solution - just paint it yourself. Sounds like a very small job and the City alreadyRead More agreed it is a good idea.
George Metropulos June 19, 2013 at 12:59 pm
Do you really think the city is waiting for someone to get killed?
Michele Moyer June 16, 2013 at 09:17 am
Thanks Joan - there is one in the sub-head of the blog I posted on School-Force Voices today; wouldRead More love if it could be corrected. Been scratching my head til I saw this post :)

Sorry about that! There's nothing I can do on my end----it's system-wide bug, which I believe isRead More fixed now. :)
Belmont96 June 13, 2013 at 09:40 am
I also preferred the 'old' Patch - this format makes it difficult to find articles that are aren'tRead More that old. One example was the informative article on who was running for city Council. I was having problems finding it and finally had to query on a candidate's name to find. I don't recall having that issue with the original format. Also our neighborhood had a water break line and we were without water for some hours a few Sundays ago. I tried to find out the reason for the break (because of construction or old pipes?) and could not find anything on the Patch regarding this. Not sure if they just didn't report or I just couldn't find.

Not crazy about the new Patch either. Also, I want to post-for sale, and this section is crowdedRead More with announcements, etc.
Pearl June 14, 2013 at 04:15 pm
Another thing that needs to be fixed: When you go to leave a comment, it takes you over to whereRead More you have to sign in, you sign in expecting to be returned to the article on which you are commenting, but it, instead, takes you back to some different article. PLEASE FIX THIS!!!! Also, please reinstate the feature where we can sign up to be notified if/when more comments are made concerning the article(s) we've commented on so we can follow the conversation. Thank you.

what do the local Belmont restaurants think of this? do these people pay a license to the city?
Joan S. Dentler (Editor) June 4, 2013 at 07:15 am
Hi Don....thanks for your question. Yes, Off the Grid does pay a licensing fee to the city, and soRead More far, we haven't heard any concerns by local restaurants. The food trucks provide an option to a traditional restaurant---pick up and go----and they are only around 4-5 hours per week (on Mondays, typically not a big restaurant night anyway). Have you tried the food yet?
