Pet Food Express Coming to Belmont

The independent pet food and supply retailer will take over the space formerly occupied by Blockbuster.

The long-abandoned Blockbuster building at Belmont’s crossroads will soon be full of life when one of the country’s leading pet food retailers moves in over the summer.

Pet Food Express, an independent chain with 46 stores throughout the Bay Area, is known as much for its corporate culture of animal welfare as for its selection of high quality pet foods and supplies, and hands-on customer service.

According to City of Belmont’s community development director Carlos de Melo, tenant improvements are underway for the space located at the corner of Ralston Avenue and El Camino Real. De Melo said Pet Food Express anticipates completion in about eight weeks, with a grand opening in mid-June.

Pet Food Express is known for its pet fairs and “Adoptathons,” and according to its website, has aided in the adoption of more than 60,000 pets over the past 10 years. In 2012 alone, permanent cat adoption centers in five of their stores placed 1,751 cats, kittens and rabbits in new homes.

In a recent Patch column, Scott Delucchi of the Peninsula Humane Society praised Pet Food Express for its high quality food and supplies and its corporate philosophy of shining a light on animal rescues and shelters.
