Hillsdale Shopping Center Plans Major Renovation

A luxury movie theater and outdoor dining are two improvements the mall hopes to implement.

Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo is planning a major renovation in the next few years, including a luxury cinema and outdoor dining.

The mall, located at 60 31st Ave. in San Mateo, will renovate the North Block of the shopping center to revitalize an aging portion of the facility, according to a statement released by the mall.

“Hillsdale Shopping Center plans to upgrade our facilities so that we can continue to offer the best amenities and the most vibrant shopping experience on the Mid-Peninsula,” Larry Ivich, Hillsdale Shopping Center General Manager, said in a statement.

“The renovation of the existing shopping center will provide a more transit friendly facility that will connect to Bay Meadows and the new Caltrain station,” he said.

A number of new amenities are being considered in the preliminary plans, including improved pedestrian walkways with increased lighting and landscaping along 31st Avenue, a new dining area with open air seating, a luxury cinema, and additional 11,000 square feet of shopping space in a new pad along S. El Camino Real at 31st Avenue.

“Our goal is to provide the newest and the best to our mid-Peninsula customers,” Ivich said.

“We believe the addition of a theater and new dining opportunities in an open air environment will be well received by our shoppers and will make us more competitive and attractive,” he said.

The renovation will take place primarily within the footprint of the existing shopping center, with the exception of an 11,000 square foot building that will not be built until a tenant is secured.

Maintaining the footprint of the current building allows Hillsdale to maximize the use of the existing property.

Plans for the shopping center are still in the pre-application process, and all discussions with potential tenants are ongoing.

The approvals process is expected to begin May 2013 and construction is slated to begin in 2014.
