It's official--a portion of the site formerly occupied by U-Buffet restaurant in the Belmont Village Shopping Center located at the corner of Ralston Avenue and El Camino Real, has been leased by Five Guys Burgers and Fries.
According to Belmont's community development director, Carlos DeMelo, the national restaurant chain has secured a lease for 2,500 square feet of space, including the corner section of the site and the corner-facing patio.
"They have paid for their lease and picked up tier permits and are currently selecting a contractor to do the work," said DeMelo. He expects construction to begin this fall.
The lease of a portion of the U-Buffet site by Five Guys still leaves approximately 3,000 square feet of space to be developed. DeMelo says the city is in close contact with the property owners on trying to obtain new a new tenant(s).
Five Guys is known for its basic, simple menu:burgers, fries and dogs. According to the company's website, Five Guys (so named because five brothers started the company) opened its first restaurant in Arlington, VA in 1986 and shortly therafter built a cult-like following, expanding to over 1,000 locations in 47 states and six Canadian provinces.
