Belmont Unemployment Falls Again

Food service and transportation are keeping San Mateo County employed.

Joblessness is continuing its encouraging downward trend in San Mateo, Marin and San Francisco counties, dropping to 5.0 percent in May, down from 5.2 percent in April and 8.5 10 percent back in June of 2011.

In Belmont, unemployment fell accordingly from 4.3 to 4.2 percent. Back in February it was up at 5 percent.

Across the region, jobs were added in transportation, finance, manufacturing, information and leisure/hospitality.

Overall, 4,800 jobs were added in the area from April to May. Compared to the same month last year, there are currently 25,300 more local jobs in 2013. About 1,700 of the new jobs are in the leisure/hospitality sector. According to a state report, the most surprising gain was in transportation/utilities, which increased by an unusual 1,400 jobs.
