The relationship between the San Francisco Giants and Anchor Brewing Company is about to get tighter — sort of like the telepathic connection between pitcher Matt Cain and catcher Buster Posey during a perfect game.
According to a company release, San Francisco-based Anchor will be the first tenant for the Giants' Mission Rock waterfront development just steps away from AT&T Park.
Anchor, based at a plant on Potrero Hill a few miles to the south, will build a production-distribution facility on what is now Pier 48 — right next to the Willie McCovey statue. It will have a restaurant, museum and other public attractions.
Anchor, which has a popular booth at the ballpark, will keep its facility on Mariposa street and use the 212,000-square-foot Mission Rock space to quadruple its beer output from 120,000 to 600,000 barrels a year.
"This is big news for us. We can now further expand our domestic market and open up new international markets," said CEO and co-owner Keith Greggor, a Novato resident. "It's also a huge commitment to San Francisco."
The Huffington Post covered the unveiing of the development's plan in April 2012. San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said Mission Rock would be one of the largest urban mixed-use projects in America.
"(It) will become an enormous economic boost for our city," said Lee in a release at the time. "It will create thousands of construction and permanent jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenues while creating much-needed housing and open space for a growing neighborhood and office space for companies starting or expanding in San Francisco."
Anchor, best known for its signature steam beer, has been made in the city since 1896, and Anchor Brewing has already called six San Francisco locations home, Greggor said in the release.
“It is believed that 'Anchor' was chosen as the brewery name for its indirect, but powerful allusion to the booming Port of San Francisco," he said. "We’re excited to bring Anchor to our first waterfront home at Pier 48.”
The 27-acre Mission Rock complex is to include office space, retail locations and 1,500 apartments. There will be outdoor park space with a boardwalk, small cafes and an open space that will accommodate 5,000 people for festivals, events and outdoor movie nights, according to the Huffington Post story.
Construction should start in late 2014 if plans are approved by various government agencies.
