Anchor Brewing Eyes Expansion Next to AT&T Park

Novato resident and Anchor CEO Keith Greggor says Mission Rock development will quadruple company's beer output and increase ties with S.F. Giants.

The relationship between the San Francisco Giants and Anchor Brewing Company is about to get tighter — sort of like the telepathic connection between pitcher Matt Cain and catcher Buster Posey during a perfect game.

According to a company release, San Francisco-based Anchor will be the first tenant for the Giants' Mission Rock waterfront development just steps away from AT&T Park.

Anchor, based at a plant on Potrero Hill a few miles to the south, will build a production-distribution facility on what is now Pier 48 — right next to the Willie McCovey statue. It will have a restaurant, museum and other public attractions.

Anchor, which has a popular booth at the ballpark, will keep its facility on Mariposa street and use the 212,000-square-foot Mission Rock space to quadruple its beer output from 120,000 to 600,000 barrels a year.

"This is big news for us. We can now further expand our domestic market and open up new international markets," said CEO and co-owner Keith Greggor, a Novato resident. "It's also a huge commitment to San Francisco."

The Huffington Post covered the unveiing of the development's plan in April 2012. San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said Mission Rock would be one of the largest urban mixed-use projects in America.

"(It) will become an enormous economic boost for our city," said Lee in a release at the time. "It will create thousands of construction and permanent jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenues while creating much-needed housing and open space for a growing neighborhood and office space for companies starting or expanding in San Francisco."

Anchor, best known for its signature steam beer, has been made in the city since 1896, and Anchor Brewing has already called six San Francisco locations home, Greggor said in the release.

“It is believed that 'Anchor' was chosen as the brewery name for its indirect, but powerful allusion to the booming Port of San Francisco," he said. "We’re excited to bring Anchor to our first waterfront home at Pier 48.”

The 27-acre Mission Rock complex is to include office space, retail locations and 1,500 apartments. There will be outdoor park space with a boardwalk, small cafes and an open space that will accommodate 5,000 people for festivals, events and outdoor movie nights, according to the Huffington Post story.

Construction should start in late 2014 if plans are approved by various government agencies.

The City has spent time working with the developer, behind closed doors it would seem, yet inputRead More from the public was an afterthought due to MANY families showing up at a May 6 City Council Meeting (not on the Agenda, yet rink to close June 1 !) So many kids spoke so sincerely and eloquently how the closure would hurt them and their friends. Does San Mateo City Hall care about the residents of our community? Especially the children. City Hall has the upper hand (the Master Plan agreement), we expect them to step up. Why has City Hall allowed SPI to make the children of our community suffer so much agony and pain over this process? Shame on City Hall for letting this drag out !!

Don't give up....the kids are worth it! It is wrong for SPI to be in non-compliance with the masterRead More plan. City Hall should be filing some type of injunction to stop closure of the ice center....this is not right. Repeat of what happened with 7 Eleven on North San Mateo Drive when the developer ignored our City ordinances/plans. Why is this happening again in our City of San Mateo?

Again, thank you Brian for this great article about Nesbit. I'm unsure of how it turned into aRead More sounding board for the petulant to vent but those of us who know how wonderful Nesbit is sure appreciate your article.

API of 800 is not bad but parents are comparing it with other schools in the district. There areRead More other issues that make parents unhappy. The residents in RWS and Belmont Shores are paying property tax which contributes to the building of RWSE. There is an expectation that their kids will go to the kids they help fund. The RWS parents are unhappy because they were told they would not be affected by the no boundary policy. Then, a year later 26 families are affected. No one like surprises. The board's decision to use a 'walking distance' algorithm to promote neighborhood schools is not working. Well, hypothetically if Nesbit API is over 900 and the other schools has API of 800, would we still have this discussion? We would not know for sure but something to think about if API is a factor among others.

I just moved into the neighborhood behind Iron Gate and we bought in Belmont because of the schools.Read More I am kinda shocked to find people bashing Nesbit. The API score is over 800, has great diversity, and the location seems to be pretty convenient. Our son has 2 more years before he starts, but we wouldn't mind one bit if we ended up at Nesbit. What's the difference of 100 points on API that an extra 5 minutes of father-son tutoring time can't fix. Besides, we all end up at Ralston and Carlmont anyways. To me, those are the schools that matter most.
