I want to get out early word about a Question and Answer Forum for prospective BRSSD School Board candidates at 5pm before the Thursday, June 20th School Board meeting at the district office. This is the last regular School Board meeting for the 2011-2012 school year. This forum was discussed at the last board meeting, but I have to say it is tentative because I have been unable to get communication from any BRSSD officials.

It is my understanding that 2 current School Board members will be available for an informal discussion. This is an opportunity for prospective candidates to learn more about the position's time commitment, requirements, the School Board's governance role, etc.

I would encourage all interested people to attend the meeting if possible.

This forum will obviously be useful for prospective candidates in the November election. But I also think it is important for other interested people. With a majority of seats open, this election is important for guiding the future success of the district. We all know of the many existing and upcoming challenges: budget, student population growth, boundaries, brand new superintendent, multiple new school principals, upcoming parcel tax on the ballot, common core curriculum implementation, union negotiations, etc. The new board we elect will play a key role in tackling these challenges.

Elections for the five member School Board take place every two years. However in recent years we have seen few elections. School Board members have typically assumed office as a result of uncontested and canceled elections or from appointments by the sitting Board members after a resignation. I am grateful for the time and energy board members devote to their thankless task. I also think that local government positions, like School Board members, should represent the best of dynamic American democracy. For that to happen we need candidates, elections, and public discussion. That is my goal in putting out information about the November School Board election.

The deadline for filing with the county office to run for the BRSSD School Board in November is August 9th.
