Adorable. Our art musuem should be actively participating with the community more - EVERY Belmont school should exhibit regularly, as should the students of Belmont Rec programs. The Manor is an underused community facility.

Charles Armstrong is the 1# school for dyslexic learners in California!!! It is a life changing school for children with reading and writing disabilities. The teachers are unbelievably dedicated! The children learn lifelong strategies to deal with their learning differences. Any child who is lucky enough to attend Charles Armstrong is one of the luckiest children in the United States! This is absolutely no exaggeration. Unfortunately, the public schools in CA have cut all serves for dyslexic students. It is 100% up to parents to get their children tested, outside the school district and get them the help they need....Yes, insurance will cover the testing. At this point the public schools are only helping the neediest bottom 2% of children in the district. It has gotten particularly bad in the last two three years, since all the funding is drying up due to the economy. The schools are performing triage.

What a great video, cute kids and GREAT art. It is encouraging to see that our local students have an opportunity display their creations in this type of venue. Their parents must be proud of the hard work that it took for these young artists to finish these art projects. I totally agree with Kristin, all of the schools should offer this type of opportunity for the students. Also, let us not forget to mention the art teacher (s) for arranging and coordinating this type of activity.

Today in Belmont, dyslexic public students are treated just as they were in the 1970's. Sadly, there is no state law which requires screening for dyslexia in kindergarten/1st grade in the CA public schools. The schools will wait until a child falls three years behind grade level before doing anything. They are not proactive...only reactive when the schools STAR tests scores go down. They simply wait until the child fails and by then anxiety and depression have set in. If you have a child in private school watch out, a lot of private schools are clueless as well....Read "Overcoming Dyslexia" by Sally Shaywitz, MD Yale Medical School, 2002. It is the bible of dyslexia. Don't be in denial! The younger your child gets help the better. If you can't afford Armstrong, there are many educational therapists that can work with your child after school....The worst thing a parent can do is be in denial! Half of Silicon Valley is run by dyslexic businessman and engineers!!! Dyslexic children are very smart they just learn differently. Good Luck...PS Dyslexia runs in my family, it is highly inheritable....If it is in your family tree watch out...you have a one in four chance of your child inheriting dyslexia. My family has had to learn all this the hard way...Luckily, I was smart enough to not trust the public schools in Belmont.

To clarify: the credit for this exhibition goes to the Belmont Arts Council. They invite the art students of Charles Armstrong School to exhibit in the BAC Gallery (in the Twin Pines Art Center) every year, and it is always wonderful. The Belmont Arts Council Gallery is curated by Gail Gandolfi, long-time Belmont resident. The Peninsula Museum of Art leases the Manor House from the City of Belmont and occupies a portion of the main floor (galleries and an art reference library). Artists rent the second-floor rooms for their working studios. The public is welcome to visit the building five days a week.

Since I am away for 3 months (in New Zealand), I cannot see this show in person this year so I am glad that I could see some of it in this video. The students always do such colorful and inspiring work. Good job, kids!

Hi Carmen....thank you for your post. Can you be more specific about the location of the dangerousRead More driveway? Can you add a photo?
Michele Moyer June 16, 2013 at 09:17 am
Thanks Joan - there is one in the sub-head of the blog I posted on School-Force Voices today; wouldRead More love if it could be corrected. Been scratching my head til I saw this post :)

Sorry about that! There's nothing I can do on my end----it's system-wide bug, which I believe isRead More fixed now. :)

I also preferred the 'old' Patch - this format makes it difficult to find articles that are aren'tRead More that old. One example was the informative article on who was running for city Council. I was having problems finding it and finally had to query on a candidate's name to find. I don't recall having that issue with the original format. Also our neighborhood had a water break line and we were without water for some hours a few Sundays ago. I tried to find out the reason for the break (because of construction or old pipes?) and could not find anything on the Patch regarding this. Not sure if they just didn't report or I just couldn't find.

Not crazy about the new Patch either. Also, I want to post-for sale, and this section is crowdedRead More with announcements, etc.

Another thing that needs to be fixed: When you go to leave a comment, it takes you over to whereRead More you have to sign in, you sign in expecting to be returned to the article on which you are commenting, but it, instead, takes you back to some different article. PLEASE FIX THIS!!!! Also, please reinstate the feature where we can sign up to be notified if/when more comments are made concerning the article(s) we've commented on so we can follow the conversation. Thank you.

what do the local Belmont restaurants think of this? do these people pay a license to the city?
Joan S. Dentler (Editor) June 4, 2013 at 07:15 am
Hi Don....thanks for your question. Yes, Off the Grid does pay a licensing fee to the city, and soRead More far, we haven't heard any concerns by local restaurants. The food trucks provide an option to a traditional restaurant---pick up and go----and they are only around 4-5 hours per week (on Mondays, typically not a big restaurant night anyway). Have you tried the food yet?
