Belmont's Melodrama Month Just Around the Corner

Belmont Community Players' latest production, "Gold in the Hills—or—The Dead Sister's Secret," opens Oct. 7.

In its quest to preserve the art of melodrama in Belmont, the Belmont Community Players (BCP) will present this year’s production,  “Gold in the Hills—or—The Dead Sister’s Secret,” Oct. 7-22 at Barrett Community Center.

Complete with villains (“Boo!”), heroes, (Hurrah!), and heroines (Awww!), the City of Belmont-sponsored show is a kick back to the golden days of 1890s melodramas. The interactive, action-packed family show features entertaining actors, dancers and singers.  Audience members are encouraged to cheer or jeer the actors and sing along with the “Olios” singers and dancers.

Since 1988 BCP has provided the Bay Area with these authentic melodramas, an undertaking that requires the participation of nearly 100 volunteers who contribute everything from acting and directing to costume design and lighting.

The group has a roster of several hundred citizens throughout the Bay Area, but an emphasis is placed on the involvement of Belmont residents. The troupe encourages local authors and the use of original scripts whenever possible.
