Volunteering is a Family Affair at Barrett

A team of volunteers today sanded, scraped and swept Barrett Community Center on Sunday in preparation for a more extensive makeover in two weeks.

Jaya, Ari and Deven Kapoor are learning early the benefits of volunteer work and community service. The three siblings (their 2-year-old brother was home with mom) joined their dad Rajal Sunday morning to help prepare Barrett Community Center for a painting project later this month.

Barrett has been selected as a National Rebuilding Together location for a volunteer project on April 27. During National Rebuilding Together day, a team of more than 100 volunteers from EA Sports in Redwood City will work to paint the building's exterior, improve landscaping, and paint the multi-use room.

Jaya, a student at Keyes School in Palo Alto told Patch she is working on a non-profit organization of her own that will build breast cancer awareness among young people. And Ari, a student at the Carey School in San Mateo is also organizing his own community service project.

In addition to the Kapoor family, other volunteers included new Park & Rec commissioner Craig Michaels and Richard Harmison.

Belmont Park & Rec Director Jonathan Gervais organized the prep day volunteers.

Gervais credits Belmont's own Cari Pang Chen, the Rebuilding Together program director, for helping Barrett be selected as one of this year's projects.
