Pedal Power Rules at Bike Rodeo this Saturday

Bikes, trikes, scooters and skateboards will take the place of bucking broncos and cowboy clowns this weekend at the first-ever Bike Rodeo at Barrett Community Center.

Cyclists will learn some rules of the road this Saturday as Belmont celebrates "Streets Alive" with a Bike Rodeo at Barrett Community Center this Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

"The Bike Rodeo matches the theme of getting the community to take back our public spaces, as well as getting out of cars and into other forms of transit," says Belmont Parks & Recreation Director Jonathan Gervais.

Gervais explained that participants will receive tips on how to ride safely, with emphasis on getting more kids on their bikes to ride to school--or just for fun.

In addition to safety tips, the event, which is open to cyclists of all ages and riding levels, will feature helmet checks and free bike tune-ups. Courses will be set up for beginners and an off road course for more experienced riders.

The event is a partnership between the City of Belmont, the Belmont/Redwood Shores School District, San Mateo County, the Silicon Valley Bike Coalition, the Belmont 4H, and is funded by the San Mateo County Safe Routes to School Program. Supervisor Groom will kick off the activities.

Gervais encourages residents to bring their bikes, trikes, scooters and skateboards and enjoy a day of living smart, playing smart and riding smart.
