County Supe to Kick-Off Bike Rodeo at Barrett

Streets Alive!  Parks Alive!  Event activities are being celebrated in cities throughout San Mateo County and Belmont is no exception. 

Children and families of San Mateo County are invited to get active and enjoy the outdoors from 10 am to 2 pm at Barrett Community Center's Bike Rodeo. Activities will include cycling equipment checks, bike-handling skills, an off road course, bike races, and spin art.  Special guests will include Supervisor Carole Groom who is scheduled to welcome children and families at the event kick-off.

 This free event is made possible through a partnership between the City of Belmont, the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District, the Belmont-Redwood Shores Healthy School Initiative, Belmont 4-H, the Belmont Police Department, Safe Routes to School of the San Mateo County Office of Education, and the Silicon Valley Bike Coalition. 

Funding support for event activities was made possible by the City/County Association of Governments, a  “Revolution of Responsibility Grant” awarded to Belmont 4H, and the Safe Routes to School Grant program offered through the San Mateo County Office of Education.

The vision for Streets Alive!  Parks Alive!  came from the community during a community forum, "Creating and Using Active Public Spaces", hosted by Supervisor Carole Groom in October 2009. 

The inaugural "Streets Alive" was hosted across cities in San Mateo County in 2010, and again in 2011. In 2012, it was renamed Streets Alive! Parks Alive! to emphasize the importance of parks in healthy activity and in quality of life.  Many cities have opened streets and highlighted public places such as parks, plazas and trails as a way to promote healthy outdoor activity for a healthy future.  People of all ages and physical abilities have come together at Streets Alive!  Parks Alive!
