4-H Sewing Project Benefits African Youth

Belmont 4-H held one of two sewing-based community service events last weekend. This is the third year that under the adult guidance of Linda Litz, long- time Belmont resident and 4-H leader, youth and adults from around the county have come together to sew pillowcase pattern based dresses and shorts for African youth.

Their goal is to help 50 girls and 25 boys with new clothing that is theirs, to show them that someone cares. The funds for this project were secured through a grant spearheaded by Linda Litz and 11-year-old Alyssa Higdon, the junior 4-H leader for this project.

To get volunteers, Alyssa has gone from club to club, speaking out about the importance of this project, and how girls in Africa in particular need to know that they have value.

"It's fortunate that we have such great people to help and take time out of their day to volunteer for this program," said Higdon about last Saturday's sewing event, Little Dresses for Africa.

Little Dresses for Africa is a nationwide program offering, year round opportunitities for 4-H members. The second, and last event will be held on Nov. 17 at the Crystal Springs United Methodist Church in San Mateo.
