Belmont 4-H Plants Oak Trees at Cipriani Park

Members of the Belmont 4-H planted the trees on Sunday morning.

Ten kids with the Belmont 4-H showed up at with their parents on Sunday morning to plant oak trees.

Parks Manager Daniel Ourtiague said it was the sixth consecutive year the Belmont 4-H planted trees in Belmont to celebrate Arbor Day.

It's also the fourth consecutive year Belmont has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation.

“We commend Belmont’s elected officials, volunteers and its citizens for providing vital care for its urban forest,” John Rosenow, chief executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation, said in a statement.

“Trees provide numerous environmental, economical and health benefits to millions of people each day, and we applaud communities that make planting and caring for trees a top priority,” he said.

Belmont had to meet four standards to become a Tree City USA community. Tree City USA communities must have a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. Belmont's proclamation was at the April 26 City Council meeting.
