500 Expected at the "Ultimate in Recycling"

Shoppers can pay a little extra today to get an early peek at the Congregational Church rummage sale - the largest in San Mateo County.

It’s the “ultimate in recycling,” said organizer Michelle Carter.

The annual Congregational Church of Belmont mega-rummage sale, in its 30th year, offers a three-day, two-story extravaganza for sale aficionados.

Some 500 people will pass through the gates this weekend, with a line around the building having formed by 5 p.m. today (gates open at 5:30), Carter said. Shoppers can pay $10 to attend the pre-sale today, and receive a $5 coupon good on any purchase.

What’s for sale? Antiques, books, clothing (for children and adults), equipment, toys, electronics, furniture, linen, jewelry and art.

The rummage sale benefits church programs with 30 percent of the proceeds going to community programs such as Samaritan House, Second Harvest, Habitat for Humanity, etc.

The church donates whatever is left over. The Peninsula Humane Society will inherit blankets, Home & Hope furniture and kitchenware. Clothing goes to groups that provide business attire for jobseekers; costumes and props go to Hillbarn Theatre (this year, a mink coat and two fox stoles).

The main sale takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, with a bag sale from 3 - 4 p.m.

Shoppers can re-charge with refreshments in the church dining room.

The Congregational Church of Belmont is located at 751 Alameda de las Pulgas.
