NDB's Students Clean Up Ocean Beach Shoreline
On a brisk Sunday morning in November, seven
Notre Dame students, representing their school’s newly formed Sea Shepherd club, travelled to San Francisco to join others in an effort to clean the shoreline at Ocean
Beach. This gathering of volunteers was organized by the San Francisco Chapter of the
Surfrider Foundation.
During the two-hour clean up, volunteers found discarded plastic bags, cigarette butts,
glass and plastic bottles, and used spray paint cans. “Seeing as there is a beach clean
up effort every couple of weeks, it’s shocking to see how much litter accumulates,” said
Amy Smerdel ’14, president of the NDB Sea Shepherd club, “Our Notre Dame team
collected 15 full buckets of trash.”
“Participating in events such as this allows our students to join together in a community
project that directly benefits our beaches, affords an opportunity for public service and
is a low stress, fun way to strengthen a sense of community,” said Maryann Osmond,
Notre Dame Belmont’s Interim Head of School.
