CONFESSIONS OF A SERIAL ART THERAPIST: Art Therapy and Forensics

Art Therapy and Forensics-- A three-hour lecture and discussion followed by a book signing of Art on Trial: Art Therapy in Capital Murder Cases

Featuring David E. Gussak, PhD, ATR-BC

The first part will focus on art therapy in forensic settings and will familiarize attendees with the theories and applicable techniques used in working in prison settings. Dr. Gussak will draw upon historical perspectives, various theoretical constructs, and his own experiences to explore the benefits of art therapy. This may include a brief overview of his empirical research studies to evaluate the effectiveness of art therapy with the prison inmate.

The second part will address forensic art therapy. Dr. Gussak will describe the work that culminated in the book Art on Trial. This section will focus on his experience as an expert witness for a murder trial as part of the defense team. Dr. Gussak will show some of the 100 drawings, paintings and photographs created by the defendant that were assessed to determine his mental status, and how this information was used as evidence in court as part of the defense.

Dr. Gussak will also draw from the experiences of other art therapists who have provided testimony for murder trials.

Dr. Gussak is professor and the Chairperson for The Florida State University Department of Art Education, and is the Clinical Coordinator for its Graduate Art Therapy Program.
