Monday is Last Day to Register to Vote in June 5 Election

Eligible voters must register by May 21.

With the Presidential Primary Election three weeks away, eligible San Mateo County voters have until Monday to file a new or updated voter registration card to be allowed to vote in the June 5 election. “New to this year, the legislature is allowing individuals who obtain their American citizenship after May 21 the opportunity to register and vote up until the close of polls on June 5 in the Primary Election,” said San Mateo County’s Chief Elections Officer Mark Church. Church reminds voters that, “This countywide election includes federal, state and local offices as well as statewide propositions and local ballot measures.  There are many issues on the ballot that will affect a voter’s quality of life, so it is important that eligible …

Jubilation at Facebook Headquarters

Celebration at Facebook's Menlo Park office kicks off first day of trading.

Big smiles adorned the faces of Facebook employees Friday morning, as the Menlo Park-based social networking giant began trades shares on the public market. In the hours after the market opened, Facebook shares erased nearly 18 percent of their early gains, Reuters reported. But Facebook, which was headquartered in neighboring Palo Alto for years, still raised nearly $18.4 billion in one of the biggest IPOs in history. At their new headquarters in Menlo Park, CEO Mark Zuckerberg rang the morning trading bell before hugging and high-fiving COO Sheryl Sandberg and other employees, according to Reuters. Locally, the impact of a whole generation of wealthy employees becoming overnight millionaires has led many to speculate about the impact …

June 5: An Alphabet Soup of Props and Measures

A brief tutorial on measures S, T, U.W, X, Y and Z.

San Mateo County voters will consider several business-related taxes and a handful of school parcel tax and bond measures in the June 5 primary. Among the most contentious measures on the ballot are a proposed transient occupancy tax increase and business license taxes for commercial parking and car rental businesses in unincorporated areas of the county. Proponents of all three measures include Board of Supervisors Adrienne Tissier, Supervisor Carole Groom and San Mateo County Schools Superintendent Ann Campbell. Opponents include the citizens' group Taxpayers for a Strong Economy and the general managers of the Best Western Grosvenor and San Francisco Airport Marriott hotels. Measure U would raise the transient occupancy tax paid by …

Poll: State Prop Would Add $1 To Cost Of Cigarettes

Not surprisingly, Prop 29 is opposed by the tobacco industry. What do you think?

California's June 5 Presidential Election Primary may be relatively moot for Belmont voters, since it now appears presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has a lock on the Republican nomination, to face off against President Barack Obama in November. However, two statewide measures will be included on the June ballot; one adds $1.00 to the cost of a pack of cigarettes, the other limits the term of new legislators heading to Sacramento to 12 years, down from the present 14. Most controversial is the battle over Proposition 29, already being fought on television sets and radio channels around the state and here in San Mateo County. It imposes an additional tax on cigarettes to fund additional cancer research. "It's a do-good thing," says Gene …

I am not eligible to vote in CA, but if I was, I certainly would VOTE YES ON PROP. 29. Former Assemblyman Gene Mullin said he feels that the cigarette tax increase should come out of the state legislature rather than be voted on at the ballot box. Well, if that is so, why did he not propose such when he was in the State Assembly? The California cigarette tax has only been increased once in 30 …   more ›

During this period, any eligible voter may cast a ballot at one of two voting center sites near Millbrae that will be set up: In a press release issued by the county, Church states “As a convenience to voters, we provide several options for early voting: voters may join our Vote by Mail program; or they may go to one of our two Voting Centers, where they can vote on a voting machine or vote by paper ballot or drop off a voted mail ballot.” Hours of operation for the two Voting Centers are …

The president plans to attend three fundraisers in the Bay Area.

For less than a Lady Gaga VIP concert ticket, you can attend a rally with President Barack Obama at the Fox Theatre on Wednesday, May 23. Tickets start at $250 for general admission, confirmed the Obama campaign. With re-election up for grabs in November, the President is making his way around the Bay Area with three fundraisers in one day, reported the San Jose Mercury News. The president will begin with a campaign roundtable at Palo Alto’s Garden Court Hotel at 4:30 p.m. to support the Asian-American/Pacific Islander community. The cost? $35,800, much steeper than the Fox Theatre rally. He’ll then stop for dinner at Lisa and Douglas Goldman’s home in Atherton at 5:30 p.m. with tickets also costing $35,800. Anna Eshoo’s top donors revealed.

A look at Open Secrets’ profile for U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA) reveals a predominantly high-tech list of donors to her 2012 reelection campaign. Eshoo's  top backer is Gilead Sciences, of Foster City, which has given $22,000 to her campaign committee from individuals and PACs combined, according to Open Secrets data from the latest report, from December 2011. Eshoo represents Belmont in the 14th Congressional district. Gilead’s PAC has given the same amount of money to Republicans as to Democrats so far this year: $10,000 each, including $5,000 to Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA), $5,000 to Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and $5,000 to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). In the number two slot is Oracle, which gave Eshoo $15,500 total this…
