El Mejor Burrito en Belmont (Best Burrito) Es.....

Belmont Patch users selected Metate Taqueria as the best place for burritos in this week's Readers' Choice poll.

If you're not careful, you might just miss it and end up entering Hwy. 101 South, but if you're in the mood for a great burrito, instinct will direct you to the front door of El Metate Taqueria at 120 Harbor Blvd. in Belmont. El Metate received 53 percent of the vote in what was one of our most popular Readers' Choice polls to date. Coyote's Mexican Cafe in the Carlmont Shopping Center was also a popular burrito spot with 40 percent of the vote. Here's a bit more about El Metate Taqueria from the Belmont Patch Directory: El Metate Taqueria is a fun Mexican restaurant located on Harbor Blvd. in Belmont. As you walk in you are greeted by Mexican music from the juke box. The brightly painted chairs and tables take up much of the restaurant…

Jubilation at Facebook Headquarters

Celebration at Facebook's Menlo Park office kicks off first day of trading.

Big smiles adorned the faces of Facebook employees Friday morning, as the Menlo Park-based social networking giant began trades shares on the public market. In the hours after the market opened, Facebook shares erased nearly 18 percent of their early gains, Reuters reported. But Facebook, which was headquartered in neighboring Palo Alto for years, still raised nearly $18.4 billion in one of the biggest IPOs in history. At their new headquarters in Menlo Park, CEO Mark Zuckerberg rang the morning trading bell before hugging and high-fiving COO Sheryl Sandberg and other employees, according to Reuters. Locally, the impact of a whole generation of wealthy employees becoming overnight millionaires has led many to speculate about the impact …

Poll: Belmont Safeway.....Time For a Remodel?

The Safeway store on El Camino Real in Belmont is exploring a comprehensive remodel.

For those of us who have been around a while, it seems like the Safeway at 1100 El Camino Real is still a fairly "new." But at his State of the City address last week, Mayor Dave Warden outlined a few potential future Belmont projects, and Safeway was at the top of the list. The store is exploring a potential comprehensive remodel, including a revised site plan, enlarged the store, additional podium or rooftop parking, additional retail shops on the site, and a public plaza area. What to you think about the possible expansion of the Belmont Safeway store? Tell us in today's poll.

I agree with Steve that if they improve the one on El Camino, the one on Alameda will likely close.   more ›

Man Illegally Imports 202,000 Pounds of Tuna, Pays $17,500 Fine

The Yellowfin tuna was brought into the Bay Area from the Philippines.

A Daly City fish importing business owner has been fined $17,500 for illegally importing more than 202,000 pounds of tuna from the Philippines, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. Silicon Valley start-up makes news with its new product - Swivl-It!

Satarii, that three-year-old start-up in San Carlos known for its production designing and technology developing, has gained national attention for its greatest creation: the Swivl-It - an appropriately named swiveling, motion-sensored smartphone dock, revolutionizing hands-free video capture.  The Swivl-It is $129, a hefty pricetag for a device some reductively refer to as a "moving iPhone stand." Mystery of Shopping Center "Sculpture" Solved

The new contraption near Starbucks in the Carlmont Shopping Center is a giant water valve.

Thank you to those who posted their comments last week regarding this Titanic-sized valve that has gotten puzzled looks from passers-by. The valve was installed at Carlmont Shopping Center as a safety precaution as directed by Mid-Penisula Water District.  Should there be a natural disaster or major water leak, this valve would be used to shut off the water flow. There are several of these valves located throughout Belmont, each strategically placed to control the gravity-fed water supply that flows from Belmont's hillsides. The shopping center expects to erect some type of barrier around the valve in the near future.

Poll: Who Serves Belmont's Best Burrito?

Tell us your go-to spot in Belmont for the ubiquitous burrito in this week's Readers' Choice poll.

They are the near-perfect food. An excess of all your favorite ingredients swaddled in a soft, chewy tortilla--burritos are packaged in such a way that they can be eaten at an elegant table, a park bench, or from behind the wheel. And where else can you get this balance of veggies, carbs, protein and flavor for (typically) under five bucks? And what other food moves so effortlessly from breakfast (eggs, chorizo and salsa) to lunch (grilled shrimp, shredded cabbage, lime), to dinner (beef, rice, refried beans, cheese, salsa)? Cast your vote and tell in the comment section below where in Belmont you go when you crave the perfect burrito. And as always, if you need to go north, or south of the border for your burrito, go to that city's Patch…

RWC Businesses Save Friday Night Concert Series

After the state eliminated redevelopment agencies, future funding for the Music on the Square concert series was uncertain.

Dust off your dancing shoes, buy a bottle of sunscreen and get ready for the Friday night concert series “Music on the Square” in downtown Redwood City starting June 1. Last year, the future of the concerts remained in limbo when Gov. Jerry Brown decided to eliminate California cities' redevelopment agencies, which funded various projects from city events to subsidizing affordable housing projects. View the full schedule of “Music on the Square” here. The City of Redwood City partnered with the Downtown Business Group and the Fox Theatre to secure the remainder of the funding that was dissolved along with the redevelopment agency. Attendees will still have the opportunity to donate any amount to the “Bucket Brigade” that circles the crowds…
