A two-alarm fire just off Highway 101 in Redwood City caused the residents of the LeMar Trailer Park to evacuate. One 9-year-old girl was sent to Kaiser Hospital for smoke inhalation.

Nearly 30 trucks from six fire departments,Redwood City, Menlo Park, San Carlos, Belmont, Woodside and San Mateo County were on hand at 1933 E. Bayshore Road. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the blaze that occurred at 10:53 a.m.

“With the large amount of fire shown, we just wanted to be cautious,” Redwood City Deputy Chief Stan Maupin said of the large response. Trailer park fires are also of great concern because of the proximity of the properties, he added.

Gabriela Guzman, one of the residents whose trailer was destroyed, said she was in her trailer but had no idea there was a fire. She opened another door then saw a large fire coming from the bathroom.

“There was this huge fire but we didn’t know how it happened,” she said.

Guzman added that her sister, the child sent to the hospital, was okay and was being treated for her asthma.

“We saw the fire and I started banging on doors telling everyone to get out,” said neighbor Bert Coils, who lives in one of the trailers at the entrance of the park.

The fire is now contained and officials expect East Bayshore Road to be re-opened in a few hours, Maupin said.  

Damage was estimated to be around $135,000, said city spokesperson Malcolm Smith.
